Military Pay Increase 2017 BAH and basic pay VA loan buyers

If you want to know what changes have been approved for Military Families for 2017. Pay attention to the base pay and basic allowance for housing changes.  

On December 8, 2016, the full Senate passed the final conference report for the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act by a vote of 92 to 7. The bill will now move to President Obama for final signature. If approved by the President, the 2.1 percent pay raise for 2017 will become effective January 1, 2017.

Military pay will see a 2.1 percent increase for 2017, compared to 2016 levels. The military pay tables below apply to active members of the Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

The calculator above (and related tables below) reflect 2017 monthly pay based on the 2.1 percent pay raise, which is effective as of January 1, 2017. This pay increase will be reflected in the January 15 paycheck.

The 2017 Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rate has increased on average by 2.4% or approximately $41 per month, according to a Defense Department news release. The new BAH rates will take effect on January 1, 2017 and service members will see their first increase on their January 15th pay.

 

The overall rates are based on area- areas such as Washington DC and Northern VA will have a higher allowance than areas in Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach. also BAH Update 12/11/16: Congress has agreed to not reduce the Basic Allowance for Housing benefits for new entrants beginning in 2018. The language originally called for only covering what service members actually pay in rent.

Annapolis, MD – Governor Larry Hogan and Secretary Kenneth Holt this week announced a $20 million initiative aimed at members of the Millennial Generation that will give a boost to otherwise qualified buyers who have been unable to move into homeownership because of significant student debt.

Through the “You’ve Earned It!” initiative, the Maryland Mortgage Program is offering a 2.75 percent fixed rate, 30-year mortgage and $10,000 in down payment assistance to qualified homebuyers with more than $25,000 in student loan debt. The program is open for a limited time to families purchasing a home in one of Maryland’s 82 Sustainable Communities. Maryland’s Sustainable Communities program seeks to strengthen reinvestment and revitalization in the state’s older communities through state, local and private sector partnerships. There is at least one designated Sustainable Community in each of Maryland’s 23 counties and Baltimore City.

Military Families have just been punched in the face!

Military families have been punched in the face by our House of Representatives.  The House has passed a bill to be sent to the Senate that would approve a 5% reduction in BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing).  

According to a recent Pew Research Report, serving in the military was “practically a requirement for serving in Congress.” As recently as the early post-Vietnam era of the late 1970s, a combined 77-percent of the members in the House and Senate had prior military service. Today, however, only approximately 20-percent of our political representatives have military experience.  This means are politicians are out of touch with the needs of military families and veterans.

Other projected cuts include cuts to military commissaries (have they seen grocery store prices)….. Cuts to tuition assistance for active duty. Veterans in Congress

 According to Military by owner: They are out of touch because they are without having experienced moving cross-country every two to three years and the resulting financial hardships that come with said moves, most notably spousal employment, military families can easily discredit our representatives as being out of touch. 

If this is passed through the Senate Military families will be KO’d once again………………

Tax free weekend is back for Virginia ninth year

Gone are the days of brown paper and jumbo blue pencils.  Public school is sending home growing school supply list.  But there is good news, Save Money this weekend- shop for tax exempt School Supplies,

For the ninth straight year, Virginia’s most popular sales tax holiday returns the first full weekend in August. This year, it’s Aug. 1-3. Clothing, footwear, school and office supplies will be tax-free during the three-day event.

Most school supplies that cost $20 or less each, as well as clothing items and pairs of shoes priced at $100 or less each will be exempt from Virginia’s 5.3 percent state and local sales tax.

For those of us in Northern Virginia, where the sales tax is 6 percent, we’ll save even more. For example, if you spend $500 on qualifying items during the sales tax holiday, you’ll save $26.50 on exempt purchases elsewhere in the state. In Northern Virginia, you’ll save $30.

The list of tax-exempt items is the same as last year. It includes pens, pencils, loose leaf ruled notebook paper, scissors, binders, backpacks, construction paper, sneakers, hats, shirts, dresses, jeans, bathing suits, diapers, T-shirts and many other items. There is no requirement that the purchases be made for school purposes.

All retailers who sell the exempt items are required to participate.

The tax-exempt items are available to anyone shopping in the state and there is no limit on the number of products you can buy tax-free as long as each one qualifies under the guidelines.
